Many outdoor activities are available very close to the B&B, with many more opportunities within range for a day’s outing.
Canoeing
The River Wye is in view of our front door, and only a couple of minutes walk away. It is a popular place for canoeing, and there are several local venues offering canoe hire and tuition such as Ross-on-Wye Canoe Hire. For those wanting a slightly longer canoe trip, Hereford Canoe Hire will arrange you a River Wye tour of up to 4 days.
Walking
The area offers excellent and varied walking. The Wye Valley Walk can be accessed within 15 minutes walking from the B&B (although it’s visible from the house, on the far side of the river). The nearest section of Offa’s Dyke is around 10 minutes drive away, near Monmouth.
The Forest of Dean contains a multitude of footpaths, including the Wysis Way and the Gloucestershire Way long distance footpaths.
The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons national park are about 45 minutes drive from the house, offering challenging mountainous hiking. At a similar distance, the Golden Valley offers gentle and idyllic walking country on the English and Welsh borders.
Cycling
The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley are fine locations for leisure cycling. The Forest has an extensive network of cycle paths, and is recognized as a premier family-friendly destination for cycling. Also, there is an all terrain area, just 2 miles from Belvedere House. Cycles for all ages and families can be hired nearby.
Rock climbing
For those with the necessary experience and expertise, there are popular rock climbing venues in the area. For example, Symond’s Yat is only ten minutes drive away, while Wintour’s Leap and Wyndcliff are reachable in around 30 minutes. Tuition is also available locally.
Angling
The River Wye offers excellent nearby river fishing, with the River Usk also within reach. There also extensive still-water angling in the Forest of Dean. With the necessary permits, available locally, there is coarse and game fishing available right outside the house.
Adventure
Numerous outdoor and adventure activities are available in the Forest of Dean and surrounding area, including local Ramblers groups.
History and culture
The Forest and Wye valley offer much of historical interest . Goodrich Castle is a few minutes drive away, while Chepstow Castle, White Castle and Skenfrith Castle are all reachable within 30-45 minutes by car.
Hay-on-Wye , home of the World-famous literary festival and renowned for its second-hand bookshops, is less than an hour’s drive.
Wildlife
Symond’s Yat is a few miles away. This is one of the best-known locations in the UK to view peregrine falcons, as well as being a nationally-famous viewpoint. The area is rich in wildlife, with a reserve on nearby Coppett Hill and an RSPB reserve at Nagshead.
Golf
There are several courses in the area, and the B&B is within 30 minutes drive of the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
