Belevedere House - Guest House Bed and Breakfast Accommodation Lower Lydbrook Gloucestershire

Access Statement

At Belvedere House, we are working toward making our premises as accessible as possible for all. However, due to the position and layout of the property, there are limits as to what can be achieved. Any comments or feedback will be gratefully received.

Belvedere House is built on a steep slope overlooking the River Wye. The property is accessed via a private driveway that climbs from the road below. The entrance to the drive is over a cattle grid whether on foot or by car. Residents’ off-road parking is a little way below the property, but guests are welcome to bring their vehicles to the top of the driveway to unload luggage. Help is available to carry bags up to the house.

There are 29 steps from the top of the drive to the house. These can be slippery when wet so caution is needed when climbing and descending; there is a handrail to one side.

The driveway can be lit at night. There is also automatic security lighting at the top of the drive and over the front door of the house.

There is a public footpath on the far side of the property which is accessed from the road below, opposite the village ‘Tump’. There are 75 steps up to the house.

There is one step into the house. Both guest rooms are on the first floor up a flight of 12 stairs. There is a bench in the hallway where you can sit to remove wet or muddy footwear before taking it upstairs to the drying room. Once at the top of the stairs, there is one step up into the conservatory.

We have 2 cats; they are not allowed in the guest bedrooms but have access to the rest of the house. We don’t allow them in the kitchen at mealtimes, but they do walk through at other times to be fed in the utility room beyond.

Mobile telephone reception from the house and grounds and is at best, variable. There are several portable handsets in the house for the landline, please ask if you wish to use one.

The staircase is illuminated at night. There is an automatic nightlight on the landing that comes on at dusk. A torch is also provided in each bedroom.

Gill will attempt to cater for any special dietary needs. Vegetarian, gluten-free and diabetic options can be provided. If you have any requirements, please let us know at the time of booking.

Menus and in-house information folders are in large print format.

With the exception of a small lawned area to the side of the house and a patio along the front of the property, the garden is mainly natural woodland. This is steeply sloped and has no purpose-built walkways through it. Managed with advice from the Forestry Commission, this area will remain largely untouched so as to encourage flora and fauna to thrive. This doesn’t create the manicured appearance of a landscaped garden, but is a haven for wildlife. With this in mind, we suggest that guests don’t wander through, but if they decide to do so, it is at their own risk. After several attempts, we are yet to manage a complete exploration of our own garden!

The nearest shop and post office is in the village. This is a 20 minute walk, or 5 minutes by car. There is a bus stop on the road opposite the house and round in the village; buses run to the nearest towns of Ross-on-Wye and Coleford around 6 times a day. The nearest railway station is in Lydney, some 25 minutes by car. Taxis can be booked locally, but availability is variable and booking is necessary.
